WHAT IS THE FIFA™ WORLD CUP

The FIFA™ World Cup is the pinnacle of international football, an elite competition where national teams from every corner of the globe compete for the ultimate prize of being world champions.

A Brief History

The journey began in 1930, when Uruguay hosted (and won) the very first tournament. Since then, it has evolved from a 13-team invitational into a massive global competition. Over the decades, we’ve seen the tournament expand to accommodate the growing quality of football worldwide, moving from 16 teams to 24, then 32, and now reaching a historic new peak of 48!

How it Works

This year’s tournament differs slightly, with an added round of 32, but more on that later! Here is what the tournament traditionally consists of:

• The Group Stage: Teams are divided into groups of four, playing a round-robin format, whereby every team plays each other once. The top two teams of each group will proceed to the next stage of the tournament, with the remaining teams heading home early
• The Knockout Rounds: The top teams then advance to a high-stakes, "lose, and you’re out" bracket. This includes the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, and Semi-finals. This year, there's the round of 32 before the round of 16.
• The Final: The two remaining teams face off in the most prestigious match in sports to be crowned World Champions

Quick note: If teams finish level on points in the group stage, positions are determined by goal difference, then goals scored, and finally head-to-head records

Memorable Moments and Legendary Players

The FIFA™ World Cup is built on the shoulders of giants. Every fan has a memory. For some, it might be Maradona’s "Goal of the Century". Picture the heat of Mexico City as Diego Maradona picks up the ball in his own half against England. Eleven seconds of pure magic followed, as he weaved through five defenders like they were statues, leaving Peter Shilton on the turf before slotting home.

For others, it might be Zidane’s masterclass in '98. The electricity of the Stade de France pumping as the maestro of elegance powered two thunderous headers past Brazil. That night, he was made a national icon, as he was projected upon the infamous Arc De Triomphe.

And how could we not mention the main man? The one who started it all, Pelé. His third trophy was a samba-infused masterclass that crowned him as football’s father-like figure, while making Brazil arguably the greatest team to ever play the game.

Most recently, we witnessed the most heart-stopping final ever played. We saw Lionel Messi complete his legacy in Qatar 2022, as he hoisted the trophy in Lusail, cementing his place alongside the greats. We also saw an unreal performance from Kylian Mbappe, who became only the second man to score a hat-trick in a FIFA™ World Cup final. By dragging France back into the game almost single-handedly, Mbappe proved he is the heir to the legends of the past, in a game that felt like a changing of the guard.

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE 2026 FIFA™ WORLD CUP

Get your calendars ready. The 2026 FIFA™ World Cup is set to be the biggest and most ambitious edition yet, and for the first time ever, three nations will co-host: the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament kicks off on June 11th, 2026, and concludes with the final on July 19th, 2026.

Key Cities and Stadiums

The tournament will be spread across 16 iconic North American cities, with 104 games to be played. Plenty for you to get stuck into! Let’s go over some of the key venues:

• Mexico City: The legendary Estadio Azteca, the home of Club America, will host the opening match. Making it is the first stadium to host an opening match in three different FIFA™ World Cups (1970, 1986, and 2026)
• New York/New Jersey: The MetLife Stadium in New Jersey has been selected to host the 2026 Final. A slight change of pace to the regular NFL fixtures that are typically held there for the New York Giants and New York Jets
• Vancouver: BC Place will be a primary hub for matches in Canada, home of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

HOW THE 2026 WORLD CUP WORKS: 48-TEAM FORMAT

With this year’s whopping 48 teams compared to the usual 32, there are a couple of changes to accommodate the enhanced scale of the tournament.

The group stage will consist of 12 groups of four, rather than the traditional eight groups of four. Plus, as well as the top two performing teams in each group progressing to the next round, the top eight performing teams who finished third in their groups will also reach the new Round of 32 stage.

TEAMS AND PLAYERS TO WATCH AT FIFA™ WORLD CUP 2026

As we look toward 2026, the usual powerhouses remain the teams to beat. Brazil will look to reclaim their throne, Argentina aims to defend their title, and France remains a frightening force of depth and talent. And, of course, the question everyone is wondering: Can the Three Lions finally bring football home under the new leadership of Thomas Tuchel?

But what about the players? The world’s best will all be facing off at the big stage, so who do we need to keep tabs on?

• Kylian Mbappe: The Frenchman will be looking to retain his country’s status as World Champions, and is sure to be eying up the golden boot as well
• Lamine Yamal: The standout player in the UEFA™2024 Euros, Barcelona’s prodigy is expected to have yet another impressive campaign in a dominant Spain side
• Jude Bellingham: England’s star boy, Jude will be the engine of the midfield, looking to carry his country on his shoulders to their first FIFA™ World Cup since 1966
• Vinicius Junior: The Los Blancos star is almost certainly going to be Brazil’s main force as they look to win back their FIFA™ World Cup Trophy
• Erling Haaland: Another golden boot contender, arguably the world’s best number 9, will be hoping to take Norway as far as possible after a dramatic qualification campaign, ending a 28-year absence from the tournament

ENGLAND'S ROUTE TO THE FINAL

The Three Lions have been placed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. By no means an easy group, but Tuchel's squad will be aiming high this tournament.

Since 1970, when the black-and-white Adidas Telstar was designed specifically to stand out on monochrome TV screens, every tournament ball has told a story. From the Aztec-inspired patterns of the 1986 Azteca to the space-age graphics of the 1994 Questra, these designs capture the spirit of their time.

2026 sees the debut of the Adidas Trionda, the official match ball. Its name is a fusion of "Tri" (for the three host nations) and "Onda" (the Spanish word for wave or vibe). The vibrant red, green, and blue swirls represent the flags of Canada, Mexico, and the USA. You'll even find subtle, embossed icons like the Maple Leaf, the Eagle, and the Star hidden within the texture.  It features "Connected Ball Technology" with a 500Hz motion sensor to give precise data to match officials, helping achieve faster and more accurate calls.

The best bit: The Kits

It’s not just about the ball; the 2026 kit drops are some of the most story-driven we’ve ever seen. Major providers like adidas and Nike have moved away from "templates" to create shirts that tell the narratives of nations.

Take Argentina’s 2026 Home Shirt for example, which features a unique shapeshifting fade of three different blues, each one pulled from their three winning years (1978, 1986, and 2022).
