Don't Let the Weather Dictate your Run: Running Clothing for Different Weathers
Published on 26/09/2024 by Jasmin Bodman
You step outside, your running shoes laced up and your favourite t-shirt and shorts set on, but it's pouring with rain - or maybe it's scorching hot and you can already feel your clothes sticking to you. Running can be a rewarding (and free) activity that you can enjoy and is great for all fitness levels, whether you're just getting started or you've been an avid runner for years.
However, being prepared for your run is essential. Having the right clothing, footwear and accessories will help you to get the most out of your activiity, whether it's a quick sprint after work or a long-distance session at a weekend. This guide will help you to choose the right clothing for the weather - unpredictable downpours, a frosty chill and dazzlingly hot sun can affect your run, so having the right clothing will help you to keep focus on your fitness and stay comfortable for the duration of your run.
If you want a brief overview of what to wear on a run, without a main focus on the weather, then check out our What to Wear Running guide for a concise summary. But if you're looking for some more in-depth inspiration, or have no idea where to begin choosing your clothing for a run coming up, then keep reading to find some of our recommendations on how to dress according to the weather.
Running in the summer months
You see the sun outside and your first thought is to grab your running shoes and hit the trails. However, you can't shake the feeling that you might get too hot, which'll then ruin your run. The key to dressing appropriately when running in warmer weather is to think about keeping cool.
Choose lightweight and loose fitting clothing for summer running, something moisture wicking is best. Cotton tends to absorb moisture, so you may want to steer clear of your favourite cotton t-shirt or vest. A running top or vest are your best options, as many of them are built with modern fabrics that'll allow you to stay cool and dry while you run.
If it's particularly warm, you may want to wear your sports bra with a cover up, like a lightweight t-shirt. Feel the benefits of a supportive sports bra and feel cool and unrestrcited, too.

Running bottoms
In terms of what to wear on the bottom, a pair of running shorts are a considerable option, thanks to the mobility they can provide. If you'd prefer to stay a bit more covered up but still want to be cool, opt for a moisture-wicking pair of running tights. Shorts can provide plenty fo air flow to your legs while you're out in the heat, but if you want something to give yourself a bit of a barrier, then running leggings or tights could be your go-to.
Don't forget the important accessories for your warm weather running, as well, including:
- Sunglasses
- A cap or hat to protect your head from the sun's rays and heat
- Moisture-wicking running socks
Layer up for your winter run
The cooler nights and frosty air shouldn't put a stop to your fitness! If you still fancy going out and about for a run, then the key to running in the cold is layering up! Wrapping yourself up tightly might sound like a good idea to stay warm, but you might just overheat.
Base layers
Base layers are some of the most important pieces you'll want to include when dressing for your winter run. Opt for a long or short-sleeved, moisture-wicking top that'll help to keep the heat in but also dry, as well as some lightweight shorts or tights.
Aim for that 'second skin' feeling to aid in keeping warm!
Clothing
Once you've got all of your base layers sorted, you'll want to consider the clothing to go over the top. Everyone's different and it can come down to trial and error when deciding what you prefer to wear when running.
From tracksuit bottoms, to thicker leggings, a sweatshirt or a hoodie, loose pieces that will provide warmth while still being comfy are great for focusing on your run without worrying about your clothes.
When running in the cold weather, a running jacket will become your new companion. Look for features like high collars, tighter cuffs on the sleeves, warm linings and even thumbholes, which'll help keep the heat in. Lightweight but effective is the key!
When preparing for cold weather running, you can calculate your running temperature by adding 10-20 degrees to the outside temperature. Remember, depending on how quickly your body heats up and cools down, how slow or how fast you're running and how long you run for all play a part!
Running in the rain
Rain shouldn't stop you from embarking on a good run, so prepare for the wet weather effectively.
Waterproofs are essential but one thing to remember when dressing for the rain is not to add more layers, it's to wear the correct layers.
A technical layer should come first, so base layer tops, tights and shorts are a good choice. Aim for moisture wicking fabrics to allow your skin to stay cool and dry.
Invest in a good running jacket too, as this'll be a lifesaver in wet weather. Choose not just a waterproof jacket, but one that is windproof and breathable too.
Important accessories can be vital in helping you get the most out of your run in bad weather, so consider quality running socks to help prevent blisters and aid in ventilation. A cap can finish off your look and protect your head from the weather, too.
Running is an exhilarating activity that can help you not only stay fit, but help you to experience a range of outdoor environments as well. Whether you're off for a quick jog after work or you're preparing for a half marathon, ensure you have the right equipment for the weather!
